exercise physiology WoodvilleCOMBE, WILLIAM (1741-1823), writer, was born in Bristol and educated at Eton. He was a contemporary of Lyttelton, Fox, and Beckford, but he gave himself up to dissipation and left without taking a degree. However, he had a fortune left to him by his godfather, Alderman William Alexander, and afterwards travelled for some years in France and Italy.

After his return to England, he participated in the Edinburgh Phrenological Society discussions and became one of its leaders. His views were widely spread, and his arguments had an air of confidentiality and dramatic urgency. Converts came in, new societies were founded, and controversies began. He wrote a pamphlet against Spurzheim and answered in another pamphlet by Sir William Hamilton and the Edinburgh Review.

Dr Syntax had begun life as a series of verses accompanying Thomas Rowlandson’s comic caricatures. They were published in a large octavo volume, priced at one guinea. The success of this work led to further collaboration between the author and the artist, and the ‘Our of Doctor Syntax in Danger’ (1816), contains some of his best verses.

The ‘Second Tour of Doctor Syntax’ and the ‘Tour in Search of Consolation’ followed quickly but were less successful than the first. Finally, in 1821 a ‘Third Tour’ and the ‘Sentimental Journey’ were brought out.

In his later years, he was interested in prison reform and advocated the humane treatment of criminals. He was also profoundly concerned with the education of the masses, and he helped to set up schools for boys and girls, which were run on his principles.

He was very interested in chemistry and physiology and an enthusiastic advocate of the phrenological theory. He died at Lambeth on 19 June 1823. He was distinguished for his graceful figure and elegant manners and had many acquaintances. He was a water drinker in days when such eccentricity was not generally practised. (See Hotten, ‘Life of Combe.’) His widow lived at the house in Lambeth where he had been born.

Exercise physiology Woodville studies how the human body responds to physical activity in both structure and function. This includes muscle function; cardiorespiratory and endocrine responses to exercise; the role of the cellular level in energy systems, expenditure, and fatigue; adaptations to resistance, aerobic and anaerobic training; body composition; and nutrition for sport. In addition to studying the scientific facts and theories that form the basis of exercise physiology, students will also explore the practical implications of these theories for the individual.
